Everglades

The Everglades are the largest tropical wilderness in the United States—a fact that seems to be largely forgotten! After visiting Biscayne, my mom and I drove further south to the Everglades and got to explore the park along the main road, heading all the way to where it dead ends at the visitor center in Flamingo. Along the way, we got to stop off at a number of places and do a few short trails, including the Anhinga Trail, Gumbo Limbo Trail, and the West Lake Trail. The Anhinga Trail that we did first was probably my favorite, especially since we got to see a number of native birds, and alligators swimming in the water. A lot of this park is remote and can be difficult to access, but I still feel like we got a good sense of its vastness on this visit. I’d love to go back one day and explore the other side of the park we didn’t get to see, as well as head out onto the water to get a more intimate, up-close look at the wetlands. Regardless, this is a lovely park to visit in any way you can!
